Overview: The Sport of Kitesurfing is growing v fast in these 2 years in HK, and heaps of windsurfers are becoming kiteboarders. The beaches here are usu small with many obstacles like buildings, rocks, trees, & bystanders around, so do pay extra attention on the safety! The best spots for beginners are Shui Hau Wan & Lung Kwu Tan, as it can be v shallow when low tide and the wind is usu more steady! Generally, we have wind scattered all year round, but not that frequent. On average, the chance suitable for kitesurfing is ~1-2 days per week....so the wind is so precious here!
Seasons here: Spring: E, SE, ENE (The spring’s E can be surprisingly strong)
Summer: SW (Usu weaker wind, typhoon period)
Autumn: E, NE (Most frequent-wind season)
Winter: N (Usu stronger wind!)
Gears recommended: During a year, >50% of chance is light-wind condition (esp in summer), u do need a 14-16m kite and a bigger board for better fun. However, it can be pretty windy happening around the year, so u also need a 8-10m kite & a smaller board (I used 6m twice in HK during 07’). If u want one kite & board only, 12m is the choice and a slightly bigger board is advised (with the width>41cm)!

There are many spots at nearby China with much bigger beaches and cleaner wind. The forecast is similar to HK’s, but sometimes few knots stronger. All the spots above are within 1.5-4 hours travel from HK. Day or weekend trips will be organized...
