The electroplating industrial sector is in China very strong, extensive and cross-sectoral.
There are more than 20000 electroplating industry enterprises in China and 400 enterprises in Shanghai alone. Many are small-scale.

Hence, China central government have started to promote cleaner production since the year of 2002 and continously inserted their control over those polluted industries in which electroplating factories are part of the major targeted industries because the discharge of waste gas, water, sediments from plating process have a great influence on human beings. Cleaner production has drawn worldwide attention. International community particularly developed nations will promote cleaner production as a basic strategy for economy development and environmental protection. Finally, cleaner production has become a suitable approach to make industry more efficient and less polluting. According to this auditing requirements, those enterprises do not tally with these provisions will be forced to stop production or closed. Therefore, electroplating enterprises, and especially enterprises with a large amount of discharge, should prepare for the more rigorous challenge. If they want to survive and develop, they must prepare well for cleaner production first, replyiing on sustainable development.
Cleaner production is a new production mode comparing to the traditional industry production mode and it is the trend of world industry development. Its characteristics can be briefly generalized as following: Low consumption, low pollution, and high output. On the ground that most of the electroplating factories in China have been using cyanide as main complexors and oxidizers in most of traditional electroplating processes for a long period. When cyanide is used corresponding the danger of working environment for workers is increased and wastewater treatment facilities shouled be installed which are very expensive.
Also, it is hard to stop employing cyanide for production suddenly without invention of new matured and stable environmental electroplating products instead. Besides, full time professionals with advanced technology and practical working experience are less in quantity, so there is huge market in demanding the non-cyanide and environmental products for cleaner production.
